Das arme M\u00e4dchen musste sich t\u00e4glich auf die gro\u00dfe Stra\u00dfe bei einem Brunnen setzen und so viel spinnen, dass ihm das Blut aus den Fingern trat. Als die Spule einmal ganz mit Blut \u00fcbergossen war, b\u00fcckte sich das M\u00e4dchen in den Brunnen und wollte sie abwaschen. Da sprang ihm diese aus der Hand und fiel hinab. Es weinte, lief zur Stiefmutter und erz\u00e4hlte ihr vom Ungl\u00fcck. Diese schalt das M\u00e4dchen heftig und war so unbarmherzig, dass sie sprach: „Hast du die Spule hinunterfallen lassen, so hol sie auch wieder herauf.“ Da ging das M\u00e4dchen zu dem Brunnen zur\u00fcck und in seiner Herzensangst sprang es in den Brunnen hinein, um die Spule zu holen. Es verlor die Besinnung, und als es wieder zu sich kam, war es auf einer sch\u00f6nen Wiese, wo viele Blumen standen und die Sonne schien. Das M\u00e4dchen ging \u00fcber die Wiese und kam zu einem Backofen, der voller Brot war; das Brot rief: „Ach, zieh mich raus, zieh mich raus, sonst verbrenn ich: ich bin schon l\u00e4ngst ausgebacken.“ Da trat es herzu und holte mit dem Brotschieber alles nacheinander heraus. Danach ging es weiter und kam zu einem Baum, der hing voll \u00c4pfel, und rief dem M\u00e4dchen zu: „Ach, sch\u00fcttel mich, sch\u00fcttel mich, wir \u00c4pfel sind alle miteinander reif.“ Da sch\u00fcttelte es den Baum, dass die \u00c4pfel fielen, als regnete es, und sch\u00fcttelte, bis keiner mehr oben war. Als das M\u00e4dchen alle in einen Haufen zusammengelegt hatte, ging es wieder weiter. Endlich kam es zu einem kleinen Haus, daraus guckte eine alte Frau, weil sie aber so gro\u00dfe Z\u00e4hne hatte, bekam es Angst und wollte fortlaufen. Die alte Frau aber rief ihm nach: „Was f\u00fcrchtest du dich, liebes Kind? Bleib bei mir, wenn du alle Arbeit im Hause ordentlich tun willst, so soll dir’s gut gehen. Du musst nur achtgeben, dass du mein Bett gut machst und es flei\u00dfig aufsch\u00fcttelst, dass die Federn fliegen, dann schneit es in der Welt; ich bin die Frau Holle.“ Weil die Alte ihm so gut zusprach, fasste sich das M\u00e4dchen ein Herz, willigte ein und begab sich in ihren Dienst. Es besorgte auch alles nach ihrer Zufriedenheit und sch\u00fcttelte ihr das Bett immer kr\u00e4ftig auf, sodass die Federn wie Schneeflocken umherflogen. Daf\u00fcr hatte das M\u00e4dchen auch ein gut Leben bei ihr, kein b\u00f6ses Wort und alle Tage Gesottenes und Gebratenes. Nun war es eine Zeitlang bei der Frau Holle, da wurde es traurig und wusste anfangs selbst nicht, was ihm fehlte, bis es merkte, dass es Heimweh war. Obwohl es ihm hier gleich vieltausendmal besser ging als zu Hause, so hatte es doch ein Verlangen dahin. Endlich sagte das M\u00e4dchen zu Frau Holle: „Ich habe den Jammer nach Haus gekriegt, und wenn es mir auch noch so gut hier unten geht, so kann ich doch nicht l\u00e4nger bleiben, ich muss wieder hinauf zu den Meinigen.“ Frau Holle sagte: „Es gef\u00e4llt mir, dass du wieder nach Haus verlangst, und weil du mir so treu gedient hast, so will ich dich selbst wieder hinaufbringen.“ Sie nahm es daraufhin bei der Hand und f\u00fchrte es vor ein gro\u00dfes Tor. Das Tor wurde aufgetan, und wie das M\u00e4dchen gerade darunter stand, fiel ein gewaltiger Goldregen, und alles Gold blieb an ihm h\u00e4ngen, so dass es \u00fcber und \u00fcber davon bedeckt war. „Das sollst du haben, weil du so flei\u00dfig gewesen bist,“ sprach Frau Holle und gab ihm auch die Spule wieder, die ihm in den Brunnen gefallen war. Darauf wurde das Tor verschlossen, und das M\u00e4dchen befand sich oben auf der Welt, nicht weit vom Haus der Stiefmutter. Als es in den Hof kam, sa\u00df der Hahn auf dem Brunnen und rief: Das M\u00e4dchen erz\u00e4hlte alles, was ihm begegnet war, und als die Mutter h\u00f6rte, wie es zu dem gro\u00dfen Reichtum gekommen war, wollte sie der andern, h\u00e4sslichen und faulen Tochter gerne dasselbe Gl\u00fcck verschaffen. Sie musste sich an den Brunnen setzen und spinnen. Damit ihre Spule blutig wurde, stach sie sich in die Finger und stie\u00df sich die Hand in die Dornhecke. Dann warf sie die Spule in den Brunnen und sprang selber hinein. Sie kam, wie die andere, auf die sch\u00f6ne Wiese und ging auf demselben Pfade weiter. Als sie zu dem Backofen gelangte, schrie das Brot wieder: „Ach, zieh mich raus, zieh mich raus, sonst verbrenn ich, ich bin schon l\u00e4ngst ausgebacken.“ Die Faule aber antwortete: „Da h\u00e4tt ich Lust, mich schmutzig zu machen,“ und ging fort. Am zweiten Tag aber fing sie schon an zu faulenzen, am dritten noch mehr, da wollte sie morgens gar nicht aufstehen. Sie machte auch das Bett von Frau Holle nicht, wie sich’s geb\u00fchrte, und sch\u00fcttelte es nicht, dass die Federn aufflogen. Da wurde es Frau Holle bald leide und sagte dem M\u00e4dchen den Dienst auf. Die Faule war sehr zufrieden und meinte, nun w\u00fcrde der Goldregen kommen. Frau Holle f\u00fchrte sie auch zu dem Tor, als sie aber darunter stand, wurde statt des Goldes ein gro\u00dfer Kessel voll Pech ausgesch\u00fcttet. „Das ist zur Belohnung deiner Dienste,“ sagte Frau Holle und schloss das Tor zu. Mother Holle[2]<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/h3>\nOnce upon a time there was a widow who had two daughters; one of them was beautiful and industrious, the other ugly and lazy. The mother, however, loved the ugly and lazy one best, because she was her own daughter, and so the other, who was only her stepdaughter, was made to do all the work of the house, and was quite the Cinderella of the family. Her stepmother sent her out every day to sit by the well in the high road, there to spin until she made her fingers bleed. Now it chanced one day that some blood fell on to the spindle, and as the girl stopped over the well to wash it off, the spindle suddenly sprang out of her hand and fell into the well. She ran home crying to tell of her misfortune, but her stepmother spoke harshly to her, and after giving her a violent scolding, said unkindly, \u2019As you have let the spindle fall into the well you may go yourself and fetch it out.\u2019\n\nThe girl went back to the well not knowing what to do, and at last in her distress she jumped into the water after the spindle. She remembered nothing more until she awoke and found herself in a beautiful meadow, full of sunshine, and with countless flowers blooming in every direction. She walked over the meadow, and presently she came upon a baker\u2019s oven full of bread, and the loaves cried out to her, \u2019Take us out, take us out, or alas! we shall be burnt to a cinder; we were baked through long ago.\u2019 So she took the bread-shovel and drew them all out.\n\nShe went on a little farther, till she came to a free full of apples. \u2019Shake me, shake me, I pray,\u2019 cried the tree; \u2019my apples, one and all, are ripe.\u2019 So she shook the tree, and the apples came falling down upon her like rain; but she continued shaking until there was not a single apple left upon it. You must be very careful, however, to make my bed in the right way, for I wish you always to shake it thoroughly, so that the feathers fly about; then they say, down there in the world, that it is snowing; for I am Mother Holle.\u2019 The old woman spoke so kindly, that the girl summoned up courage and agreed to enter into her service.\n\nShe took care to do everything according to the old woman\u2019s bidding and every time she made the bed she shook it with all her might, so that the feathers flew about like so many snowflakes. The old woman was as good as her word: she never spoke angrily to her, and gave her roast and boiled meats every day.\n\nSo she stayed on with Mother Holle for some time, and then she began to grow unhappy. She could not at first tell why she felt sad, but she became conscious at last of great longing to go home; then she knew she was homesick, although she was a thousand times better off with Mother Holle than with her mother and sister. After waiting awhile, she went to Mother Holle and said, \u2019I am so homesick, that I cannot stay with you any longer, for although I am so happy here, I must return to my own people.\u2019 Then Mother Holle said, \u2019I am pleased that you should want to go back to your own people, and as you have served me so well and faithfully, I will take you home myself.\u2019\n\nThereupon she led the girl by the hand up to a broad gateway. The gate was opened, and as the girl passed through, a shower of gold fell upon her, and the gold clung to her, so that she was covered with it from head to foot. \u2019That is a reward for your industry,\u2019 said Mother Holle, and as she spoke she handed her the spindle which she had dropped into the well. The next day, however, she began to dawdle over her work, and the third day she was more idle still; then she began to lie in bed in the mornings and refused to get up. Worse still, she neglected to make the old woman\u2019s bed properly, and forgot to shake it so that the feathers might fly about. So Mother Holle very soon got tired of her, and told her she might go.
